IBEW Aptitude Test Study Plan: 4 Weeks of Practice

Build a four-week study routine for electrical apprenticeship aptitude testing, with algebra examples, reading practice and a practical error-review method.

Electrical apprenticeship preparation

A useful study plan turns “review math” into a series of specific tasks. This four-week outline combines algebra, reading and error review. It is an independent practice plan, not an official schedule or a guarantee of admission. Adjust the pace to your starting point and the instructions from your training center.

First, confirm which assessment you will take

The electrical training ALLIANCE provides sample material for Algebra and Functions and Reading Comprehension. Ask your own apprenticeship program which assessment it uses, what materials are allowed, the timing and any accommodation process. Do not assume that a rule from another local program applies to yours.

Start with the official sample questions. Use them to identify topics for review, rather than treating a tiny sample as a prediction of your score.

Week 1: check the foundations

Review order of operations, signed numbers, fractions and one-step equations. Work without rushing and write down each step. After a short practice set, label mistakes: misunderstood instruction, arithmetic slip, missing method or unfinished question.

For reading, choose a short factual passage. Write its main point in one sentence and underline the sentence that supports your summary. Separate what the passage states from what you already know about the subject.

Try it: order of operations

Evaluate 18 − 3 × 4 + 2.

Show the worked answer

8. Multiply first: 3 × 4 = 12. Then work from left to right: 18 − 12 + 2 = 6 + 2 = 8. Subtracting 3 from 18 first would change the expression.

Week 2: equations and relationships

Practice equations that take more than one step to solve, replacing letters with given numbers, and finding number patterns. When solving an equation, apply the same operation to both sides to keep them equal. When reading a table, name what changes and by how much before writing a rule.

Try it: solve an equation

Solve 3x + 5 = 20.

Show the worked answer

x = 5. Subtract 5 from both sides to get 3x = 15. Divide both sides by 3. Check: 3 × 5 + 5 = 20.

Mix reading questions about stated facts with questions about a conclusion supported by the text. For every answer, point to evidence instead of relying on how plausible it sounds.

Week 3: mix topics and review errors

Use mixed sets so that you must choose the method yourself. Revisit two earlier mistakes at the beginning of a session. Solve them again from a blank page; recognizing a worked answer is different from producing it.

Try it: read only what is stated

Practice passage: “The workshop opens at eight. Deliveries are accepted after nine. Visitors must report to reception before entering the work area.”

Can a visitor enter the work area immediately on arrival?

Show the worked answer

No. The passage explicitly requires visitors to report to reception first. It gives no exception based on arrival time. The delivery rule is a separate instruction.

Week 4: rehearse the confirmed conditions

Use a timed practice session that matches the instructions you received from your program. Review unfinished questions separately from incorrect answers. Then spend the remaining sessions on a small number of recurring weaknesses rather than starting many new topics.

Review note Example
What went wrong? I wrote 10 − (3 + 2) as 10 − 3 + 2.
What will I do next time? Work out the brackets first: 3 + 2 = 5.
How will I check? Calculate 10 − 5 = 5, then compare with my first answer.

Before test day, confirm the location, arrival instructions and required identification with your training center. This plan does not replace those instructions.

Continue with structured practice
